August 1st Event

I was a typical "monsoon" Arizona day, it was cloudy first thing in the morning, but cleared during the first run group and got just plain "hot" during the rest of the event, this event was held at Bisbee / Douglas Airport (BDI).

Rob Rockefeller from the Tucson Club was the Chief of Course for the day, designed a great course, the course basically was second gear, except for the "turn -around" at each end of the course. 24 entrants, with 14 individuals signed up for TO's, it gave everyone plenty of runs. Five runs counted for the regular run groups, it was a fairly long course, and general times were around mid to high seventy seconds.

The top three PAX finishers were running in the PAX Pro-class with Dave Rock driving a 2001 Celica to 1st in the class, with Rob Rockefeller finishing second with a faster raw time driving a 2003 Honda S2000, and Bill Fisher taking third, sharing Rob's ride.

The largest group was the Street Tire class with 10 participants, John Lawson taking 1st in the class driving a 240SX, second was Perry Wong driving 1994 Civic.

In the open class, Rob Love driving a 2004 EVO beats out Doug McBride on PAX scoring, Doug gets the "hard luck" award, one of his tires went flat after the first run.

In street touring, I was lucky enough to beat out Keith Garaas driving a 1997 Miata. Richard Gray driving 1987 Starion won the Novice division. Susan Love was the only Ladies class driver, but she put down a very fast 74.914 in a 2004 EVO.

A great time was had by all, and we finished up with plenty of time to have lunch at Jimmy's Hotdogs in Bisbee.

If you would like to help design a course layout, you may submit a layout plan to the club course designer. The chief of course may use part or elements of submitted course as required to fit safety and space constraints. Contact a club member for more information. See club Info page.

Announcements: You must be an SCCA member to run at our events. Weekend memberships are available if you don't plan to run often. See the News for more details.

MINORS (under 18) You need to have your parents show up at the event and sign a minor waiver in front of a club officer if you plan to go out on course as a driver or passenger. This is NOT OPTIONAL. Once you do it, you are good for the rest of the year. If you do not have a completed minor waiver, you cannot drive or ride along. Again, no exceptions will be made.

Who We Are:
The Sierra Sports Car Club has been holding SCCA sanctioned Solo autocross events for over 30 years. We typically hold an event on the first Sunday of every month except December, when we have the annual Christmas party. Check out the Events link for our calendar of events.

Solo autocross is a great way to test the limits of your car and hone your driving skills. No special equipment is needed, and loaner helmets are provided by the club if you don't have your own. Beginners are welcome. Our courses are typically laid out on airfields or parking lots, and send drivers on a timed course marked with pylons. Runs usually last between 40-60 seconds, and you get 4-5 attempts to make your best timed run. We have participants ranging from novices to national champions, coming from as far away as California and New Mexico.

Our events are run/work, so if you wish to run, you will have to report for your work assignment on the course when you are not running. Spectators are welcome and it's free to look and maybe even get a ride along, as long as you sign an insurance waiver.

Cars on the course usually run in second gear, occasionally reaching third in the straightaways, so you are never really driving above the state speed limits. The difference is, it's like driving 60 mph in a 25 mph zone! Safety is key at these events, and we have never had an injury or collision to date. All cars must pass a safety/tech inspection before going on course. If you would like to attend an event and have never autocrossed before, check out "Getting Started" to help you know what to expect and how to prepare for what could be a life changing experience. Did I mention that it can be addictive?
